Target only the nodule, preserve the thyroid

Thyroid Nodule Ablation (TNA)

A minimally invasive alternative to thyroid surgery

Thyroid nodules are very common, especially in women. Most nodules are benign (non-cancerous).

What are Thyroid Nodules?

Thyroid nodules are lumps that form inside the thyroid gland (an important small butterfly-shaped gland in your neck). They are very common, especially in women. Most nodules are benign (non-cancerous), but larger nodules can cause:

What is Thyroid Nodule Ablation?

Thyroid Nodule Ablation (TNA) is a minimally invasive procedure used to shrink thyroid nodules without surgery.

Instead of surgically removing part of the thyroid gland, interventional radiologists use targeted heat energy either radiofrequency or microwave, delivered through a fine needle to precisely destroy only the nodule tissue. The surrounding healthy thyroid tissue remains unharmed, allowing the gland to continue functioning normally.

Why Choose Ablation Over Surgery?

Minimally invasive

Only a small needle puncture, no big incision

No general anaesthesia

Done under local anaesthesia and light sedation

Cosmetic advantage

No visible neck scar

Preserves thyroid function

No risk of hypothyroidism. Most patients don't need lifelong thyroid hormone tablets

Faster recovery

Resume daily activities from next day

Safe and effective

Nodules shrink by 50-90% within months

How the Procedure Works - Step by Step

1. Consultation

1. Consultation

Detailed medical history will be taken and reports reviewed by the Interventional Radiologist.

2. Ultrasound & FNAC

2. Ultrasound & FNAC

Interventional Radiologist will perform a neck ultrasound to confirm and characterize the thyroid nodule. An FNAC will be done to confirm non-cancerous nature of the nodule.

3. Nodule ablation

3. Nodule ablation

Under local anaesthesia a thin electrode needle (RFA or MWA) using USG guidance. Controlled heat energy is delivered through the electrode, causing thermal destruction of the nodule tissue. The 'moving-shot technique' is commonly used the needle tip is repositioned multiple times within the nodule to ensure uniform ablation of the entire lesion while sparing normal thyroid tissue.

4. Post procedure care

4. Post procedure care

After the procedure there may be mild pain in neck which responds well to medication. Most patient go home the same day or next morning. The nodule shrinks over weeks to months, and the symptoms gradually improve. The nodule shrinks naturally over weeks → symptoms improve.

Recovery Timeline

Same Day

  • Procedure completed
  • Mild neck pain managed with medication
  • Most patients go home

Next Day

  • Resume daily activities
  • Minimal discomfort

Few Weeks

  • Noticeable relief of pressure symptoms
  • Improved swallowing and breathing

6-12 Months

  • Nodules shrink significantly (50-90%)
  • Cosmetic improvement

Recovery & Results

Immediate Recovery

  • Back to routine: Usually within 1-2 days
  • Relief of pressure symptoms: noticeable in a few weeks
  • Mild neck pain managed with simple medication

Long-term Results

  • Cosmetic improvement: nodules shrink significantly (50-90%) in 6-12 months
  • Durability: Most nodules do not regrow, and recurrence is rare
  • Preserved thyroid function without need for hormone replacement

Is Thyroid Nodule Ablation Right for You?

You may benefit if:

  • You have a benign (non-cancerous) thyroid nodule that causes symptoms or cosmetic concerns
  • You wish to avoid surgery and preserve thyroid function
  • You are not fit for surgery due to age or medical conditions
  • You prefer a scar-free option with minimal downtime

TNA is not recommended if the nodule is proven cancerous. In such cases, surgery is the standard treatment.
